How to make a candle

Instructions for making a candle

Ingredients

  • Paraffin Wax or left over wax from old candles

  • Stearin (Optional)

  • Wick

  • A Milk Carton

  • A straw to stir with and one to hold the wick straight with

  • Blue Tack

  • Scissors

  • Clean Tin Can

  • A saucepan

    1. Prepare the milk carton by cutting it in half.

    2. Make sure its clean and dry.

    3. Put a small hole in the centre of the bottom of the carton and two holes opposite each other at the top of the carton.

    4. Thread the wick through the bottom hole and knot the end so it doesn’t come through.

    5. Stick Blu Tack over the knot and hole so no wax can come through.

    6. Put a straw through the two holes at the top so that you can tie the wick to it, holding the wick straight in the middle of the carton.

    7. Put some wax in the tin can (if you are using Stearin also, put that in first. Use about 1/10th stearin to wax.

    8. Put the tin can in the saucepan and heat up the water gently so that the wax melts in it.

    9. When it is melted, pour slowly and gently into the milk carton up to beneath the straw.

    10. Leave to cool – you can put the carton in the fridge to solidify quicker.

    11. When solid, take the Blue Tack off the bottom and cut the knot off – untie the wick from the straw and cut it down to about ¼ inch. Cut or peel the carton off the wax.

    12. TIP: A nylon tight will polish up the candle nicely if you want a smooth surface.
