Bioflavonoids possess a wide spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant properties.
Antioxidants disarm free radicals, thus decreasing tissue damage. Extracts of plants containing bioflavonoids and purified flavonoids were active against Herpes virus Type 1, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza and influenza viruses. Vitamin C is known as an essential anti-oxidant and enzymatic co-factor for physiological reactions such as hormone production, collagen synthesis and immune potentiation. Taking at least 1 g of vitamin C per day can be recommended for the prevention of colds based on good evidence of moderate reduction in symptom duration. While it only reduces symptoms by 1 to 2 days, it is cheap, safe, and simple to use.
Dog rose fruits are known to be a rich source of vitamin C, bioflavonoids and carotenoids.
Acerola (Malpighia glabra, emarginata) contains bioflavonoids, some component of acerola juice favorably affected the absorption and excretion of ascorbic acid.
