Urban Gardens - a good example

The municipality of Évora has delivered more than 138 plots for production of urban gardens. This decision came with the first anniversary of this initiative within the program XXI Agenda that intent to use available plots for creation of urban communitarian gardens of quality.

“After the success of the first phase, this second phase of the project will give to 138 families the possibility of use 45m2 of a place where they can cultivate the more diverse products” explains the municipality.

Besides the economic aspect that involves this project, the urban gardens of Évora will help to support new attitudes, behaves and healthy life styles and environmental sustainable, supporting a better quality of life.

Like in the first phase this urban gardens meant a “considerable investment” by the municipality in the infrastructures of the place: water deposits, fences, distribution of water with taps for collective using, building paths and marking of the plots.

Globally speaking the project Urban Gardens of Évora has already 207 plots, with a high demand from the citizens. So, the municipality keeps working to soon create new gardens, in different areas of the city. The municipality develops this project with the partnership of the parish councils.

Considering the location of the urban gardens, the easy access and next to the aqueduct of the “silver water”, the urban gardens intent to raise the food autonomy of the families, increase balanced practices of consumption, enlarge the biodiversity, construct a conscience of need sustainable development, potentiate the family and communitarian environment and support a better environmental conscience.

These urban gardens represent now an important mean of supply of fruit and vegetables to the city in a sustainable way. With the urban growing and the change of life styles, some of these standards were lost and are being recovered now.
